Background of the Study
Nurses are integral to healthcare delivery, providing critical patient care, administering treatments, and coordinating with other healthcare professionals. However, excessive workload has become a growing concern in many healthcare institutions, as nurses are often required to work long hours with limited resources and staff shortages. Studies indicate that high workload levels can lead to job dissatisfaction, burnout, and decreased job performance, ultimately affecting patient outcomes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024).
At State Specialist Hospital, Kano, nurses face increasing demands due to rising patient admissions, limited staffing, and the complexity of cases. A heavy workload can compromise patient safety, increase stress levels among nurses, and lead to a decline in job performance (Olawale & Yusuf, 2023). In extreme cases, excessive workload contributes to emotional exhaustion, absenteeism, and high turnover rates among nursing staff (Adegboye et al., 2023).
Although previous studies have established a link between workload and job performance, limited research has been conducted on the specific impact of workload on nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano. This study aims to examine how workload influences job performance, identify contributing factors, and propose strategies for workload management to enhance nursing efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, are experiencing increasing workload pressures due to staff shortages, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and administrative demands. A heavy workload can negatively affect job performance, leading to errors in patient care, reduced efficiency, and increased stress. Despite the well-documented consequences of excessive workload, there is limited research on how it specifically affects nurses' performance at State Specialist Hospital, Kano. Without empirical data, hospital management may struggle to implement effective workload management strategies. This study seeks to investigate the impact of workload on nurses' job performance and explore potential solutions to improve working conditions.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the relationship between workload and job performance among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
2. To identify the major factors contributing to excessive workload among nurses.
3. To explore strategies for managing workload and improving job performance in nursing.
Research Questions
1. How does workload affect job performance among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano?
2. What are the major factors contributing to excessive workload among nurses?
3. What strategies can be implemented to manage workload and improve job performance in nursing?
Research Hypotheses
1. High workload levels negatively impact job performance among nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
2. Factors such as staff shortages, increased administrative tasks, and high patient-to-nurse ratios contribute to excessive workload.
3. Implementing workload management strategies improves nurses' job performance and reduces stress.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, examining the impact of workload on their job performance. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and performance assessments. Limitations may include self-reported biases, differences in workload perceptions among nurses, and challenges in measuring workload objectively.
